Gamushara

In 1984, when the Nerima Ward Office's West Building was completed, a request was made by local disability organizations for a café corner within the office. They envisioned it as a place where people with disabilities could gather, converse, and participate in society, as well as a space for interaction between people with and without disabilities.

In response to this request, the ward opened the observation room on the 10th floor of the West Building, making renovations to lower the counter and wash area for easier access by wheelchair users. Meanwhile, individuals with disabilities conducted self-training on café operations, including coffee brewing, for a year leading up to the opening.

The café is managed by a committee made up of six local disability organizations, respecting the autonomy of the individuals involved. Now, to accommodate many visitors and ensure the safety of the working staff with disabilities, the café has been newly renovated and reopened on the first floor of the West Building.
