Onsenji Yumedono

Onsenji Yumedono is a unique sightseeing spot in south western Japan. Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, one of Japan’s most picturesque locations, Onsenji Yumedono offers a spectacular view of the surrounding area from atop the hill. From the top of the hill, visitors can look down and see the tranquil waters of Kagoshima Bay, Mt. Kaimon, and the city of Kagoshima.

This hillside temple complex and its surrounding gardens have been a mainstay of the Kagoshima area since 1257. Standing in the center of Yumedono is a temple dedicated to the ‘Nine-Headed Dragon God’, the protector of South Kyushu. The temple, along with its various smaller buildings, are surrounded by a traditional Japanese garden created by the famous gardener, Todo Nagayama, in 1639.

Every spring, the temple hosts a popular cherry blossom viewing event, where visitors can take part in traditional melodies and dances. Visitors can also learn about the workings of the temple by joining one of the many tours available.
