One of Japan’s most prestigious venues for classical music, Suntory Hall, was inaugurated in 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Suntory Ltd, one of the nation’s leading brewing and spirits companies.
Situated in the heart of Tokyo, near famed Akasaka Sacas entertainment complex, Suntory Hall has enjoyed a stellar reputation among music enthusiasts as one of Japan’s foremost concert halls. Music-lovers flock to the illustrious open-plan hall to experience performances from both world-renowned and upcoming artists; from classical and contemporary mores to jazz and ethnic music.
Designed by the internationally renowned architect, Arata Isozaki, the hall boasts a unique oval-shaped two-level auditorium with a seating capacity for 2,015. The hall was designed using carefully developed computer technology and some of the world’s most advanced acoustics, ensuring a fantastic sound quality that has contributed to its international appeal over the last few decades.
In recent years Suntory Hall has become a hub of many cultural events. Alongside its main repertoire of classical concerts, the venue also organises jazz and traditional ethnic music concerts, organ recitals, arts programmes and even music therapy programmes. The much-loved Synchronicity series, spearheaded by conductor Charles Dutoit, was held every year from 1995 to 2020 and featured performances by pinnacle artists in the classical music scene.
Suntory Hall is certainly an experience that yields a memorable and enriching cultural experience. With its unique shape, advanced acoustics and prestigious performances, it will doubtless remain an essential fixture of Japan’s musical landscape for years to come.
